Josephine – The Hippo
moving mechanical structure
Josephine returns.
The trained hippopotamus that once travelled the world and performed in the most prestigious venues now finds herself face to face with her former trainers once again.
Since the disappearance of exotic animals from the ring, her story seemed to have come to an end.
But now, a new moment presents itself.
Will she still remember her remarkable act? And will she recognise her old companions?
“Visitors respond with a smile — it is both impressive and endearing.”
A Poetic Scene Between Memory and Presence
Josephine, the Hippo is a visual mechanical installation in which a former circus star is reimagined.
The encounter between Josephine and her trainers forms the starting point of a scene that balances between recognition and distance, between what once was and what reappears.
The work plays with expectation and surprise, allowing space for a gentle, lightly humorous undertone.
Lightness, Scale and Wonder
Josephine is massive, slow, and imposing — yet unexpectedly light in her movement.
What at first appears static develops its own rhythm and dynamics. Small gestures and subtle interactions give the scene a playful character.
A moment in which grandeur and softness exist side by side.
